I-90 Mass Pike, and I-95 (Rt. 128) both run through here, giving commuters quick access to downtown Boston, and also to the surrounding suburbs. Rt. 9 is another major road that runs east-west, and which is lined with shops, restaurants, groceries, as well as neighborhoods. The Chestnut Hill Mall and the Atrium Mall are both located on Route 9. Newton is bordered by Needham, Wellesley and Weston on it’s west and south sides. To the north is Waltham and Watertown, and to the east is Brookline and Boston. New York City is 440 miles away, about a 4 hour drive. Public Transportation in Newton is also very accessible. The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) provides buses, commuter trains, and subway/street trains throughout the Newton area making it easy to access everything Boston and Cambridge has to offer. The “T”, America’s first subway, has a number of above-ground stations throughout the Newton Villages. There are also MBTA Express Buses for a quick alternative for Boston commuters. Logan Airport is accessible by T, at the Airport stop off of the Blue Line. From there Logan Airport offers free shuttle services to the terminals. North Station and South Station are major hubs for MBTA Commuter lines to the surrounding suburbs, and also for Amtrak trains. Newton’s largest employers are Boston College, the City of Newton, Newton-Wellesley Hospital, Reed Publishing and Technical Aid Corporation. Over 94% of Newton’s adult residents hold a high school or college diploma. Almost 40% hold a graduate or professional degree. Boston and Cambridge are world renowned for its superior academic institutions. Newton fits right in with its smart neighbors. Chestnut Hill is the home to Boston College and Boston College Law School, Andover Newton Theological School, Aquinas Junior College of Newton, Lasell College, and Mount Ida College. Newton’s public school system is also nationally recognized. The city is served by fifteen elementary schools, four middle schools, and two large high schools. According to the Massachusetts Department of Education, Newton spends an average of $8,960 per student for regular education, $19,800 per student for special education and $10,051 per stident for bilingual education.
